about the artist

Władysław Podrazik was born in 1953 in Jodłowa, in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. He is a graduate of the General Secondary School in Jodłowa. In 1972, he commenced his studies at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. After interrupting his studies due to family circumstances, he undertook training in the sculpture studio of Stanisław Proszowski in Jodłowa-Nagórze.

In 1975, he passed the guild examination, obtaining the title of journeyman wood sculptor, and began independent craft practice. In 1978, he embarked on extramural studies at the Faculty of Art History of the Jagiellonian University, while simultaneously seeking to further develop his sculptural skills in the studio of Professor Jerzy Bandura. In 1981, he designed the “Solidarity” monument in Jodłowa.

In 1982, a sudden spiritual turning point occurred in Podrazik’s artistic quest, leading him back to his earlier interest in painting.

He established a highly fruitful relationship with the painter Witold Pazera, followed by contact with Grzegorz Bednarski, who persuaded him of the necessity of undertaking full-time painting studies. In 1984, Podrazik passed the entrance examination and began his painting studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. This period marked a phase of searching and movement between studios. His first year was spent in the studio of Professor Marian Buczek, followed by work under Professor Stanisław Rodziński and Zbylut Grzywacz. In 1987, a decisive and ultimately beneficial transfer took place, culminating in the award of his diploma in 1989 from the studio of Professor Jerzy Nowosielski. In the first half of the 1990s, he enrolled in studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Władysław Podrazik practises painting, writes poetry, and authors essays on art. His texts and articles have been published in Tygodnik Powszechny, Wiadomości ASP, Głos Plastyków, Arttak, and ArsForum. In 2007, together with Roman Mazurkiewicz, he published a selection of Jerzy Nowosielski’s reflections entitled A Prophet on the Rock (Prorok na skale) with the Znak Publishing House. He lives and works in Kraków.
